Not that it gets easier. Not that it gets harder. That it gets bigger. Every month I am further inside, and every month there is more of it.

Some of what I feel is the size of what I was given.

My mother gave me this. Her mother gave it to her. I did not see it while it was happening. You do not see the cost of a thing while you are being carried by it. Now I am the one carrying. Now I can see the price.

It is a huge price. I did not know.

So this is how I pay. Not with money. With service. With my body, my sleep, my hours, my attention. The same acts, done again, and again after that. That is the currency. I hand it over and there is no receipt.

They call it a selfless act of love. I understand now why they call it that. The self does not go first. Some days the self is not in the room.

Someone said it is a massage for your soul. Love, working on you. I hold that against my days. Some days it is true. Some days it is only work.

It is not easy. It is being needed before I am awake. It is a body that is not only mine anymore. It is love that does not ask if I am tired.

The debt does not close. That is the part I did not expect. I thought paying back was a thing you finished. You give what you owe, and then you are even. This is not that. There is no even. I pay, and I keep paying, and the account stays open, because what I am paying into is a life. A life is not a sum.

My daughter will not pay me back. She will pay it into whoever she carries next.

My grandmother paid my mother. My mother paid me. I pay my daughter. Each one pays the one who comes after. No one pays the one who came before. No one is repaid. Everyone keeps paying.

The highs are high. I have never felt anything like the highs.

The lows are low.

Both keep growing. The longer I am in it, the more of each.

Photographs by Diana Kapran
https://www.itsnova.com/dianakapran
https://www.instagram.com/feel_california

Places I Did Not Know Existed

I did not know the developmental leaps existed. everything. Where I went. What the light was like. Whether the place was worth it. I liked being the one with the report.

Now I do not go anywhere. And I still have somewhere new to show you.

The places are called developmental leaps. I did not know they existed. No one told me. Then a friend handed me a book, and the book had a map.

A leap is a week, or a few of them, when her mind changes faster than her body can hold. The book calls them Wonder Weeks. Before a new skill arrives - before she rolls, before she reaches, before she learns that I am still here when I leave the room - the whole world goes strange to her. She does not have words for it. So she cries.

This is the hard place.

She clings. She wants to be held, and only held. She will not sleep. And the crying has no caption. I check the diaper. I check the clock. I check myself. There is nothing to fix, because nothing is broken. She is only growing, and growing is hard, and I cannot do it for her.

The not-knowing is the part that gets into my nervous system and stays.

I am a person who likes a plan. I set the day, I meet the day, I show you the result. A leap does not negotiate. It arrives on its own schedule and takes my schedule with it. For a while I thought I was failing. I was not failing. I was somewhere I did not have a map for.

The book is the map. It does not stop the crying. It tells me the crying is coming, and that it will end, and roughly when. That is almost everything. The hard days are the same hard days, but now they have edges. I can see the far side of them.

Because there is a far side. The leap passes, and the other places are calm.

She is usually an amazing child. I want that on the record, next to the rest. Motherhood, so far, has been fun. Between leaps she wakes wide awake and hangs out and smiles at me. We walk the neighborhood. We drive wherever we decide to go.

On the good days I feel like I am back. I have my life back. I have my time. I make plans. I take on a project. The oxytocin comes and I feel that I could do anything, and the strange part is that I still can.

I only have to read the time. My body is no longer the body I knew. It is open. It is stitched. It is bleeding. It is learning to make milk. It is trembling between worlds.

There is no returning to who I was before.

And strangely, I don’t want to.

Labor did not begin as a storm.

It began as a whisper.

A week before her birth, I felt waves in my abdomen — like something rearranging quietly inside me. We gently tried to invite labor. Intimacy. Oxytocin. Trust.

Contractions came — but they hovered in between. Not early labor. Not active. Just enough to wake me at night. Just enough to exhaust me.

For four days I lived in waiting.

We had planned a home birth. The tub was ready. My midwife. My doula. The quiet confidence of preparation.

And St. John’s in Santa Monica — our backup plan.

On day four, after IV fluids for strength and acupuncture for encouragement, we tried once more to invite her.

My water broke.

The whisper became a roar.

Contractions five minutes apart. Deep. Immediate. Undeniable.

Then we saw it — meconium in the water.

Words like risk. Words like respiratory complications. Words like we won’t have time to decide later.

Suddenly this wasn’t about my vision.

It was about her.

The first surrender happened there.

I labored in the car with my eyes closed. Seven minutes to the hospital. Pain became geography.

At 4 a.m., I was told I was 7 centimeters open.

Relief. Pride. “We’re doing this.”

It felt like confirmation. Like proof that all those days of contractions meant something.

But the body is not a straight line.

Seven hours later, after wave after wave of pain, after believing we were well on our way, a new doctor checked me.

There had never been 7 centimeters.

It was a mistake.

I was 1 centimeter.

My uterus was exhausted. Contracting irregularly. Tired from days of trying.

I remember the silence in the room. The recalibration. The collapse of certainty.

To move forward, I would need Pitocin — stimulation to create real, regular contractions strong enough to bring her down.

This was not the path I imagined.

Another surrender.

I had been contracting for days. My strength was thinning. My nervous system felt raw and electric. And now, knowing we were essentially at the beginning again, I knew I could not do it without rest.

So I surrendered to the epidural.

Not because I failed. Because I needed to continue.

The Pitocin began. The epidural softened the edges. For the first time in days, my body stopped fighting itself.

I slept.

Roman stayed. My nurse stayed. My people rotated in and out like guardians of something sacred.

At around 6 p.m., I was gently woken.

“You’re fully dilated.”

We were almost surprised.

Roman rushed back in. Slightly disoriented from his nap. And suddenly — it was time.

I delivered on my back. In a hospital. With an epidural.

The way the books say not to.

And yet — it was exactly the way she chose.

I had energy. I had presence. I had clarity.

And then she was placed on my chest.

Perfect.

She did not follow my birth plan.

She followed her own.

And motherhood, I am beginning to understand, is this:

The continuous surrender of ego to something larger than your idea of control.

It rained outside.

A rainbow appeared.

Not in the plan.

But real.

Today my body aches in places I didn’t know could ache. The bleeding. The swelling. The humility of recovery. The milk arriving. The baby breathing beside me.

I said at one point during labor, “I don’t think I can breathe through any more pain.”

And yet, I did.

We did.

Roman was a warrior beside me. Love filled that hospital room in ways that felt architectural.

Now we are home.

The air feels different.

There is no going back.

Only forward.

Only surrender.

Only love expanding beyond what my body believed it could hold.

Author’s Note

I am writing this 24 hours after coming home, still bleeding, still swollen, still in awe. You entered our home in the quiet, uncertain hours. You stood in the intensity of active labor with such steadiness. You were hands, breath, presence. You held space when waves were crashing through me. You were strength without noise. Support without ego.

There are moments in life when friendship reveals its true form — and this was one of them. I will never forget the way you showed up.

Aleksandra Evanguelidi, my midwife.

You led my pregnancy with wisdom and calm. What I met instead was gentleness.

The nurses were kind. The environment was calm. The transitions were explained. There was softness where I expected coldness. There was humanity where I expected protocol.

And Eduardo.

I was initially nervous about having a male nurse during such an intimate, vulnerable experience.

But you were attentive, loving, steady. You watched everything. You called the doctor at exactly the right time. You protected the rhythm of the room. You treated my labor with respect and precision.

Because of your timing and care, Naomi arrived when she was ready.

You were exactly who we needed there.

Roman.

There are not enough words.

You were a warrior this entire week. ideas.
Neither does love.
Neither does meaning.

Projects are conceived the same way pregnancies are.
Sometimes when you stop trying to control every condition.
Sometimes despite fear.
Sometimes before you feel ready.

Some projects end before they’re born.
Some ideas don’t survive the process.
Some require more care than you thought you had in you.

There are miscarriages in creativity.
There are complicated births.
There are things you carry for months only to realize they will never exist outside you.

And when something does survive —
that’s not the end.

After birth comes responsibility.
Presence.
Patience.
The long work of upbringing.

Not productivity — continuity.

The last eight months have been the most creative work of my life.

Not visible work.
Not marketable work.
Work without applause or deadlines.

Creating a human inside my body.
Creating a family.
Learning to measure days not by output, but by attention.

This kind of creation doesn’t reward ambition.
It rewards listening.
Rest.
Trust.

It asks you to be well — physically, emotionally, spiritually — not because success demands it, but because life does.

And this has forced me to confront a difficult truth:

Some versions of success do not survive motherhood.
Some ambitions need to die so something else can live.

I am still afraid I didn’t become who I thought I would be.
But I’m beginning to suspect that not everything that matters responds to effort.

Maybe fertility — real fertility — begins where control ends.

⸻

I’m 33.

I don’t have a clean conclusion.
No lesson neatly wrapped in optimism.

Only this:
Life doesn’t always grow where we push it.
Sometimes it grows where we learn to stay.

And maybe becoming isn’t about reaching the best version of yourself —
but about remaining alive, open, and present long enough

for the right things to arrive.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor"
